Today is Pancake Tuesday and we’re reading Rhinos Don’t Eat Pancakes.
Can you think of any other pancake-themed picture books that we could read today?
Rhinos Don’t Eat Pancakes is a fun and nonsensical book with an important message for parents.
Kids have wonderful stories to tell. Some are true while others are wild and creative, but adults don’t always make the time to listen to them.
The author connects with the reader on the opening page of this book by asking whether they sometimes feel like their parents don’t listen to them, and introduces them to Daisy.
Complemented by retro-inspired illustrations and matte pages, we meet Daisy whose parents never listen to her. Not even when she tries to tell them about her newest friend, a big, purple rhino who loves eating pancakes.
It’s not until Dad’s pancakes go missing and they take a trip to the zoo that Daisy’s parents finally believe her that a Rhino is living in their house……and eating all their pancakes.
The ending is a little cliché, but ever so lovely, where Daisy’s parents realize that they need to make time to listen to their daughter.
