Don’t Let a Spoonbill in the Kitchen is one of our favourite books of the year. It features 6 bird species causing mayhem in unlikely environments. Pelicans are at the airport, jacanas are in a shoe shop and stilts are dancing a ballet on stage. Read more in our review of Don’t Let a Spoonbill in the Kitchen.
Narelle Oliver used linocuts to create her illustrations for this book. While, I wasn’t quite sure that Cam was ready for linocut, we were keen to play with some printing and create some silly scenes of our own.
This was a simple activity, but we shared lots of laughs as we created silly scenes and created stories from them.
You will need:
- Large bottle top lids (I had lots of lids from vitamin jars, which were perfect)
- Self-adhesive foam in animal shapes
- Black ink (you could also use black paint)
- A pile of magazines
- Scissors
How to create your home-made stamps and silly scenes:
1. Make your stamps. Simply stick your foam shapes onto the tops of the bottle lids
2. Flick through magazines and cut out some of your favourite human environments as scenes.
3. Dip your stamps into the ink
4. Find silly spots in the environments to print the animals
