After reading this book you might like to try some alphabet activities inspired by Apple Pie ABC and other alphabet books.
The Apple Pie ABC is a traditional and classic rhyme that dates back to the 18th century. Since then various artists have illustrated the text and many authors have written variations of the rhyme. So, for centuries it has been a fun and creative rhyme to help children learn about the alphabet and verbs.
Alison Murray’s Apple Pie ABC is no exception. I loved it as soon as I saw the cover. It is fun and clever. This version of Apple Pie ABC is told from the point of view of a cheeky little puppy and it is accompanied by some bright and colourful illustrations.
As with other variations of Apple Pie ABC, the story starts with an apple pie. Each sentence thereafter begins with the next letter of the alphabet.
Readers see each letter in its upper and lower case forms. The sentences are short and simple. Some are even made up of only one or two words. Yet these sentences are not detached from one other, as is often the case in alphabet books. Together they tell a humorous story of a dog that simply wants a taste of the scrumptious apple pie he watched being baked, cooled, and dished out.
Most children welcome the inclusion of pet animals in illustrations. There is something familiar about animals for children. They often add a humorous element to a story, which is true of this book. Like my daughter, I think kids will love the cheeky dog as he ogles the apple pie, pines for it, and is quietly determined to get to it.
The illustrations are quite retro in style with bold geometric shapes and deep colors of blue, red, and orange, which may also be a visual feast for infants and toddlers.
The story is short, sharp, and funny and will amuse toddlers as well as adults. Many families may even recognize this cheeky dog or its quiet determination at least.
